Is Impeachment Really the Answer?

sanders_impeachmenttime.jpg

Ever since the strange days of Bill Clinton’s extramarital affair coming to light, impeachment has been increasingly up for discussion in times of distress. Despite the fact that 7/8th of their time is up, there are still a great many people discussing the possibility of impeaching either Bush and/or Cheney for any one of a number of potential crimes.

One democratic representative has gone so far as to claim that the impeachment case against Cheney is stronger than Watergate. Perhaps simply in a play for power, some presidential candidates have also jumped on the bandwagon. People are getting more touchy about the issue on both sides, with some individuals recently booted from the National Archives for wearing shirts which discussed/described impeachment.

Though their truth and accuracy are debated, many people have introduced compelling cases for impeachment based on various sources and kinds of information. Not least among these is the case brought forward by two non-profit journalism organizations that indicated Bush and Cheney lied in the lead-up to the war in Iraq. These groups, though, are not the only ones claiming a vast amount of information that could be used to justify impeachment and the efforts are even beginning to trickle into mainstream media.

So what does this all mean? Is impeachment a potential reality or are people just spinning their wheels? It seems unlikely that impeachment would do much at this point with so little time left in the game, though proponents claim that isn’t the point if crimes have been committed. Perhaps, though, it is better to focus on winning the next election than giving an early and unceremonious send-off to the current leadership.

That is not the point of impeachment. It is to punish illegal behaviour. Only a handfull of dems have the huevos to pursue this matter (screw Pelosi). If it doesn’t happen, I hope there is a mechanism to go after this bunch criminally after the election (then I will know there really is a god).

It’s about punishment for crimes.

If Bush-Cheney make it to the end of thier terms, they will issue blanket pardons, and any hope of getting justice will go out the window.

President Clinton set the bar, allbeit very low, but the bar HAS been set. To hold him accountable for his “crimes”, and to NOT hold the Bush-Cheney cabal accountable for theirs, is rank hypocrisy.

I wrote a blog on this yesterday. http://discontinuouspermafrost.wordpress.com/2008/02/01/newsflash-osama-bin-laden-winning-in-the-war-on-terror/

For those who would brush this off as a partisan issue, particularly Hillary Haters (personally I like Hillary), consider the fact that if she is elected President, based on the precedent Bush has set, her signing statements can ignore law as passed and signed into law by the president.

Imagine 6 years from now, Hillary’s second term, a republican congress passes a ban on gay marriage (god bless them), and Hillary signs it into law promptly followed by a signing statement saying she won’t execute it. Impeach?

It’s time to reign in the executive branch, or there will be repercussions for many administrations to come, regardless of party affiliation.

impeachment, hell.

i want those men indicted and thrown in prison. i want them to live out the rest of their ugly little lives in orange jumpsuits. i want them to live in 5×5 cages with concrete floors and parasite-infested mattresses.

and for recreation? let them experience waterboarding 2 to 3 times a week, ey?
